Broadway Across Canada presents FIDDLER ON THE ROOF in Alberta

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its universal appeal and timeless message. The North American Tour continues the tradition of the 1964 Jerome Robbins TONY Award winning production, following the story of Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. Mr. Robbins won twin TONY awards for his direction and choreography of Broadway’s FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. In this National Tour, both are faithfully recreated by Director Sammy Dallas Bayes, choreographer of the Broadway Revival.

When FIDDLER ON THE ROOF opened in the United States in 1964, it was a time of change and crumbling traditions in our own country. Perhaps the explanation for its world-wide success in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s was because the play illustrated the universality of such problems as the “generation gap,” youthful dissent, revolutionary doctrine, and the oppression of minorities. Students of the time identified with the rebellious student, Perchik, and strongly related to the breaking of hallowed traditions. Tevye and others of his time struggled with these problems in 1905, and emerged triumphant, offering the hope and promise of reconciliation to a turbulent society. Today, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is as relevant as ever.

Now, in the midst of a new millennia, in a world fraught with anxiety and fear, the one constant humanity can rely on is the strength of family and of its traditions that will ultimately sustain it through its own trials and tribulations. Forty five years and a generation later, new audiences can identify and take heart as they experience the tradition in great musical theatre that is FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

In Calgary, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF plays the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on January 13 – 17, 2010. The performance schedule is Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.; Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m and a Thursday matinee at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF vary in range depending on performance, seat location, and date of purchase and start at $59. Tickets available through all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or call 403.777.0000.

In Edmonton, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF plays the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on January 19 – 24, 2010. The performance schedule is Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF vary in range depending on performance, seat location, and date of purchase and start at $59. Tickets available at Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or call 780.451.8000.

Group orders for 15 or more may be placed by calling 1.800.889.8457.

American Express® Cardmembers have access to some of the best seats in the house for all
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF performances.

The Calgary & Edmonton engagement of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is presented by Broadway Across Canada and is a subscription offering of the 2009/10 Series. For more information, please visit www.broadwayacrosscanada.ca

In Memoriam - Purple in our Pride Flag

The subject of youth suicide in the GLBT Community has been a quiet but important voice in our community. Themes of pressure to belong, to be part of a community experience, and to learn what is the "Homo-sensational Experience" --- often one's own -- can be a lot to handle. And often, youth suicide is faceless.

But in December, Montreal lost one of the key members of it's community. With his camera at each and every of Montreal's hottest events, Bobby "Jens Brady" Drake was someone at the epicentre of Montreal's GLBT tourist, events and late-night scene.

And he will be missed by many.

Montreal's next generation shared the knowledge that they were part of something much larger the moment they found themselves tagged in one of Bobby Drake's photo albums on Facebook. From Montreal's best Friday and Saturday events, to the Priape and Fetish Community, the talented drag community of Mado Lamotte, Fierté Montreal Pride and the Just for Laughs Festival; Bobby Drake's Facebook became the place to be seen in Montreal. A"Village A-List" like none other.

Wearing his signature shade of mauve, Bobby put the Purple in our Pride Flags. He will be remembered by all of us who knew him, and missed by us all.

~"Bobby Drake" - aka Jens Brady~1986-2009
